A crossbody sling bag solves one specific problem well: carrying the things you need within reach all day (passport, phone, wallet, camera, a water bottle) without taking a backpack on and off every time you want them. It sits across your chest, swings round to the front in seconds, and never leaves your body in a crowd. For sightseeing days, it is the bag I reach for first.
The short answer
Get a small sling, roughly 3 to 8 litres, in a water-resistant fabric, with one quick-access pocket and a strap that adjusts easily. Wear it across the body with the pouch at the front in busy areas. That is 90 percent of the decision. Brand matters far less than fit and size.
What to look for
- Size. A day sling is 3 to 8 litres. Smaller than that and a compact camera will not fit. Larger and it becomes a small backpack that defeats the point. If you want to carry a light jacket and a book as well, look at a 10-litre packable daypack instead.
- Quick access. You should be able to reach your phone or transit card with one hand while walking. A front pocket separate from the main compartment does this. Digging through one big pocket does not.
- Material. Water-resistant nylon or polyester keeps a passing shower or a spilled drink off your electronics. Fully waterproof is rarely necessary for a day bag.
- Strap. A wide, smooth-adjusting strap matters more than it sounds after six hours on your feet. A thin strap that needs two hands to lengthen is a daily annoyance.
- Security. Worn across the chest with the pouch in front, a sling is already hard to pick. RFID-blocking pockets and a lockable or hidden main zip are useful extras, not essentials.
A solid budget example
The tomtoc 3.5L Crossbody Sling is a good illustration of the category at a low price. It covers the basics without extras you do not need:
- Compact 3.5-litre body that holds a phone, wallet, keys, a compact camera and a slim power bank.
- Water-resistant nylon shell.
- An RFID-blocking pocket for cards and passport.
- A main compartment plus a quick-access front pocket.
- Adjustable strap, wears across the chest or over one shoulder.
It usually sells in the low-to-mid forties of dollars, but gear prices move around. Check the current figure on the product page before you decide.

What I actually carry
On the Camino I walked with just the detachable 10-litre daypack from my main pack. It held a small umbrella, a water bottle, my passport, a small camera, my phone, my wallet and a blister kit. Everything else went in the forwarded bag. The principle carries over to city travel: keep the things you cannot replace easily (documents, money, camera, phone) in one small bag that stays on your body, and put everything else in the bag back at the hotel.
In Tokyo and Madrid I moved around all day on foot and on the metro with a sling worn across the chest. It never came off in a crowd, and I never had to stop and take a pack off to pay a fare or check a map.
Sling bag or packable daypack?
They do different jobs. A sling is for valuables and quick access on a day out. A packable daypack (15 to 20 litres, folds into its own pocket) is for the days you also need a jacket, snacks, a guidebook and a bottle of water for a longer walk. Many travellers carry both: the sling every day, the daypack folded flat until a hiking or beach day.
Frequently asked questions
Is a sling bag good for travel?
Yes, for carrying daily essentials. It keeps your passport, phone, wallet and camera within reach and on your body, which is safer and more convenient than a backpack for sightseeing. It is not a replacement for a daypack on longer outings.
What size sling bag should I get for travel?
Around 3 to 8 litres for a day bag. That fits a phone, wallet, compact camera and a few small items without becoming bulky. Go to a 10-litre packable daypack if you want to carry a jacket and water too.
Are sling bags safe from pickpockets?
Worn across the chest with the pouch at the front, a sling is one of the harder bags to pick because you can see and feel it at all times. RFID-blocking pockets and a hidden main zip add a little more protection.
Can a sling bag be a personal item on a plane?
Yes. A small sling easily meets personal-item size limits and slides under the seat. It is a useful second bag alongside a carry-on.
