Zermatt sits at the head of a valley in the Pennine Alps, beneath the Matterhorn, and it is car-free, you arrive by train. From Zurich it is one change and about three and a half hours. Here is the route, the timing, and what to do with your luggage.
The short answer
Zurich Airport to Zurich main station (Zurich HB) takes about 10 minutes, with trains every few minutes. From there, a direct InterCity train to Visp runs about two hours; at Visp you change onto the narrow-gauge Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn for the last hour up the valley to Zermatt. Total from the airport: around 3 hours 30 minutes. No seat reservation is needed. Buy one through-ticket all the way to “Zermatt.”
Prices and availability in Zermatt change fast, especially around peak season. Here’s a live look at what’s available for your dates. Booking.com

Buying the ticket
Buy through the SBB Mobile app, at sbb.ch, from a machine, or at the SBB ticket office below the arrivals hall at Zurich Airport. One ticket to Zermatt covers the whole journey, including the change at Visp, you do not buy the mountain section separately.
If you plan to travel more widely in Switzerland, price a Swiss Travel Pass or a Half Fare Card against your itinerary first. The pass covers this route in full, all the way to Zermatt station. (The Gornergrat cogwheel railway above the village is only discounted, not included.) Our Switzerland transport guide walks through which pass is worth it.
The route in detail
Zurich HB to Visp runs one of two ways: via Bern and the Lötschberg Base Tunnel (fastest, around two hours), or via Lucerne and the Bernese Oberland (slower, more scenic). The SBB app will show you both.
Visp to Zermatt is a cross-the-platform change onto the red Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn train. It climbs the Matter valley through Stalden and Täsch, about 1 hour 5 minutes, roughly every 30 minutes. The valley narrows and the peaks close in as you go; it is the part of the trip people remember. Zermatt station is right in the centre of the village.
Your luggage
Two options:
- Carry it on the train. There are racks at the ends of each carriage and overhead. Fine most of the time, but the Visp change and the narrow-gauge train get crowded in ski season and midsummer.
- Send it ahead. Swiss rail runs a station-to-station baggage service, drop your bags at a Swiss station (or check them from the airport with some airlines) and collect them at Zermatt station, usually the next day.
At Zermatt, electric taxis and hotel e-carts meet the train; many hotels will collect you and your bags from the station if you let them know your arrival.
If you are driving
You cannot drive into Zermatt. The last stop for cars is the Matterhorn Terminal in Täsch, with a large paid car park. From there the shuttle train runs into Zermatt in 12 minutes, every 20 minutes, roughly 6:00 to 22:00.
What the trip is like
I did this leg on a Swiss Travel Pass, as part of a trip where I was on a train, a lake ferry or a cable car most days, which is exactly the pattern that makes the pass pay off. Zurich to Visp went by quickly. The narrow-gauge stretch from Visp up to Zermatt, climbing steadily with the valley walls rising on both sides, is the part worth having a window seat for.
Getting back
Trains run from roughly 6:00 to 22:00. If you have an evening flight from Zurich, check the last workable connection before you rely on it, you generally need to leave Zermatt by early afternoon. For a scenic return, the Glacier Express starts in Zermatt (seat reservation required); see how to book Glacier Express seats.
